Every year the third graders get to do some research about the countries that their ancestors came from. Zack got to research Denmark and England and dress up like they would have in the year 1900 when they came across to New York City and entered at Ellis Island.

One of his good friends, Blake Audibert, he lives in our neighborhood.
They told the kids that they needed to look poor and destitute. Zack really got into the role. They had to pack in a suitcase minimal things that they would have brought from their country. Zack had a photo of his family, a wooden yo-yo, bread wrapped in a paper, a notebook and pencil, an apple. He had a passport that they made at school and had to fill out a sheet once they arrived at Ellis Island that asked them who they were traveling with and what they would be doing here in the US for work. If they answered questions wrong or failed some of the testing that they had to do they would be sent to the back of the line.
Being, Zachary Olsen, the class clown, I thought for sure that Zack would have been sent to the back of the line more than once, but he really surprised me and took this very seriously. Once he got off of the bus he ran to be at the front of the line. He passed all medical, mental and physical testing and was able to go sit in the great hall as one of the very first. He did such a great job, that he ended up sitting in that great hall for almost 2 hours and by the end of it he was begging one of the volunteers to mark him with a chalk mark and send him back through the line because he was so bored. Very cute. I was able to go in and help out with the day and enjoyed watching the other kids come through. What a fantastic thing that they do so the children realize the sacrifices that were made in their behalf.

Zack looks so funny in his little outfit and definitely playing the part! Awesome.
Zack is so cute!!!! He looks great...he really looks like an old fashioned kid. He should have been on Newsies!
